Ubuntu Install

Being a total newbie, Dappers GUI installer was a god-send. Having 3 existing partitions, because I intended to dual boot between Ubuntu and XP, caused a small problem, but if you create an extended partition, you can create both the swap and main, ext3 partition, inside it.

Apart from that slight stumbling block, everything was easy to do and after a quick reboot, I was good to go.

After the reboot I marveled at it all, its clear (well almost, it put icons to my other partitions there) desktop and applications bar on top.

Then i tried to hook my laptops wifi card to my wireless network, the networking interface was easy and looked great, but the damn thing wouldn’t work! I trawled around using another connection for ages looking for a solution to the problem, tried installing ndiswrapper and lots of other things, how stupid did i feel when i found out that if your not using hex for your WEP key, you have to prefix it with “s:”! With two keystrokes, my card was up and running!

“Now” i thought, “everything is working just as well as it does in XP” I was wrong, from upstairs in my house, XP can barely detect any WIFI signal, under Ubuntu, it got a 75%-90% connection strength! Ubuntu 1 XP 0!
