Essential Apps : Limewire
24 08 2006Ok one of the reasons i had kept my windows partition was for using LimeWire (for downloading legal files of course). Then i found out that LimeWire can be installed on Ubuntu, it does take a bit of monkeying around with command line and stuff but heres how to do it :
First download the LimeWire .rpm file from LimeWire.com, put it on the desktop
Then, to get alien, which converts .rpm to .deb, type ” sudo aptitude update”
then “sudo aptitude install alien”
Now to actually install LimeWire : “cd Desktop”
Then “sudo alien -i <Insertfilenamehere>.rpm
Et voila!
EDIT:
If Limewire isn’t working for you under Edgy, there is a fix which works in most cases, click here
Doesn’t sudo alien -i .rpm only turn the rpm into a deb? don’t you still have install the deb. i could be wrong but I am just checking.
You can just double click it and the package installer will come up and all you have to do is click install
alien worked but limewire wont open whats up
Actually, as it happens i’m having the same problem atm, you wouldn’t be running 6.10 Edgy would you?
yup
Yeah, Limewire stopped working for me under Edgy aswell, I dunno whats wrong, but if i find a fix, i’ll post it up
Just use frostwire. It’s a port of limewire with all the pro features but for free. Install it using automatix.
how do i get alien?
