General opinion on Splashy and changing the usplash
14 09 2006With a program called splashy and another program, you can change the screen ubuntu shows on booting from that brown one with the information about processes on it, to an image of your choice, a great idea in theory. To be blunt, i’d whole-heartedly recommend not bothering, it takes a good while for the average beginner to figure it out, and in the end, in my experience it either doesn’t work at all, or does work but is pretty sketchy. I used the guide from the wiki, link at the bottom of post, and it didn’t work, i was left with a completely text based boot, not what i was going for at all. Using my personal philosophy of, if at first you don’t succeed, undo and try again. 3 times i had the same problem. “Ugh, the brown one will do” i thought.
Then i heard about splashy thru the forums, installation was great, it can be found using synaptic. Configured it, and rebooted to try it out. ( In depth instructions about setting it up can be found on the site, link below) You get a load of text when you start, then splashy starts, the screen flickers, and you see your new boot up theme. It flickers alot, and sometimes doesn’t bother starting up at all, and gave my system an error, which left me staring at a command line, a terrifying sight for any new user.
My verdict, don’t bother your a*s.
But if, despite all this warning i’m giving you, you still want to try it out, here are the links you need,
