Xorg running wild

24 04 2008

Ok…hardy isn’t running fine for me…

Thats a picture of a graph of my CPU usage.

The high bit was compiz.real or Xorg, I’m not sure, ‘top’ and System Monitor tell me different things, hogging my CPU big time. It happens at random intervals and is really annoying.

It has to be a compiz problem cos if i run ‘metacity –replace’, the usage goes back to normal, as can be seen on the graph.

Has anyone else had this problem? Any known solution?!

I should mention that I’ve got an Intel integrated graphics card - the 945gma I believe, so unfortunately, the nVidia fixes posted don’t really help!

—–EDIT——-

Just thought I’d stick up some new screenshots of what the top command outputs, and what the system monitor outputs

I had this problem with 7.04. I would have to drop XGL and restart it from the terminal which was a pain. I think it was driver related, luckily since 7.10 (and now 8.04) I have not had any problems…

I just upgraded to Hardy today and had the same problem with Xorg hogging the CPU. In my case, I have a nvidia GeForce 6150 LE video card and I am using the proprietary nvidia drivers (nvidia-glx, I believe). I looked around and found this website:
http://www.redhatmagazine.com/2007/11/20/tips-and-tricks-why-does-xorgs-cpu-usage-shoot-up-when-using-nvidias-driver/

Basically, in the Device section of xorg.conf, it suggested to add the following:
Option “UseEvents” “on”

After restarting X, my Xorg CPU usage went down a lot.

Having a similar problem with Firefox.b5 it starts hogging shitloads of memory and slowing the whole thing down. Actually only happens when I’m on the college wireless, either Cisco logout popups aren’t showing up or they’re throttling me in a very fancy way :P

Another thing is that dvds refused to be recognised by the laptop, the problem was that Hardy hadn’t installed all the libdvd packages, if ye have the problem make sure libdvdcss2, libdvdreal3 and libdvdnav4 are all installed.

Hi, I’m using Debian etch 64-bits with gnome and kde desktops. My Xorg is hijacking my CPU every time that any application launches or I move a window across the screen. my cpu is AMD X2 64 5000+ and 4 GB ddr2 memory and itegrated ati HD3200 graphics card. Before, I was using the vesa driver and tried the new ati prprietary driver to see if the problem goes. Nope, the problem is now worst, with xorg sucking up to 100% CPU, iceweasel scrolling is painful, like frame by frame, drawing in the screen is slow, all is bad in both gnome and kde. This is a xorg problem and they do nothing to correct it, since 2005, around the time since it was taken the terrible decision to use xorg in linux. Bad blood.

Thats horrible, I thought the driver situation was getting better, but they can’t account for every system I suppose.
